Geostorm

You'd think this scene would come out in the film but I really don't recall

Disaster movie are the kinds of movies where execution plays a big part in its success. Getting known actors is one thing but the plot, feasibility and especially the effects used all play a big part in the formula of the disaster movie. Just a quick fyi though but in terms of disaster movies, I’ll be considering The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and the Disaster Movie (it’s a comedy from the guys that made scary movie).
Geostorm revolves around the satellite system “Dutchboy”, a weather satellite that actually controls the weather to mitigate the weather problems the Earth had been facing. Without delving too much into the plot, it involves conspiracy theories and of course global destruction and actually accurate global destruction at that. Let’s talk feasibility. When Gerard Butler’s character mentioned how capacitors hold charge, I knew that they took the details, even the minor ones seriously. Little known fact is that I’m an ECE major and hearing this line just made me smile especially since it was true. The way that the systems in the film intermingled, the geography involved and even the ways the cities were ravaged were completely believable. Like if global warming gets worse, what’s stopping the disasters from wreaking havoc on the world right? Even the concept of a geostorm, like an actual geostorm went from fictional to possible with how it had been presented. The effects used were great except for maybe one scene where the animation felt a little laggy but other than that but if you imagine hard enough, it looks real enough.
Gerard Butler is a star and nothing could ever take that away from him. Sure, he had some duds in the past but Geostorm is definitely not one of those duds. Great performance by Leonidas but the best part for me would definitely be Abbie Cornish as a secret service agent. You get wit, charm and sas rolled into one with her performance and not taking away anything from the already well known members of the cast but the performances by the international cast were great as well. Seeing as how the film really goes on a global scale, having other nationalities other than Americans was great especially with how frequent whitewashing is now in American movies. The plot wasn’t just your cookie cutter plot with a romance on the side but it had some depth in it as well. There’s a big twist and other than that, it’s better to watch the film than for me to give more info about it.
Is the film worth the watch? Definitely especially with global warming being an issues these days
8/10 Worth the money and worth the watch, Geostorm is THE disaster movie done right. One hypothetical situation is all you’ll need and when its as real as Geostorm, you know it’s worth it
