IT (2017)

I never did see clowns as scary but after seeing IT, it’s completely understandable as to why some people see these entertainers as frightening. Between the creepy movements, the fake drawn on smile and those empty soulless eyes, clown composition really is meant to bring emotion out of you whether it be fear or joy(?). That doesn’t even consider Pennywise though, but factoring how he was portrayed, the makeup, those weird fidgety gestures, and let’s not forget that serial killer mindset of his, you’ll really jump out of year seat (the first time).

When you mix literally every hit show for the past few years (i.e. Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, American Horror Story), add some crude humor and put it all in the 80’s, you’ll get IT. The first few scares were great since it was really playing into the whole Pennywise dynamic almost everybody knows IT for. The use of children to add depth to the gravity of the manipulating scenes is something else too. Sure the concept of clowns is frightening but if you can imagine some ways to add to that fear factor they probably did it in this film too. It isn’t all just fear and jump scares though as IT not only had an interesting story but it had a variety of characters to boot with their own motivations in the film. Sure there was the token black guy and girl in the group but maybe that’s how the novel was really written.

Was the movie a decent horror film? It definitely was and with a running time of 2 hours you’d shift from wanting the film to end with its suspense to enjoying the film all throughout. The film has the foundation of a good story namely a conflict, good transitions and great character motivation. All throughout you’d really get a feel for how the situation was in the 80’s and there are even some horror easter eggs sprinkled in there (it’s not hard to miss). I ended up laughing way too much at certain parts in the film but IT has some great comedic timing and if you’re used to jump scares in video games you’ll be more than ready to watch IT.

9/10 for me with it being worth the watch. The only issue I had was that in IT, you’d expect the random scares and here were the usual tropes you'd find on TV shows like the token black friend in the group or there being just 1 girl in the group, but with storytelling and character development as good as IT had it, it’s still a great movie.

*Note
- The dumbest line I heard came from this film, “The kids are floating down”
- There’s a good chance there would be an IT franchise.
