Blade Runner 2049

Set in the year 2049, Blade Runner 2049, a neo-noir science fiction film, serves as the sequel to the original Blade Runner film. The story revolves around K, a replicant, whose main purpose is to “retire” older replicants. A replicant you see is an artificial human with enhanced strength used by their society as a means having a cheap labor force. I’d love to delve more into the plot of Blade Runner 2049 but the first few seconds should be enough to let you follow through with the rabbit hole that is this film.

Blade runner’s futuristic feel really lets you get immersed in its universe. Crime dramas are one thing with their usual noir-esque feel but when you transition that feel to the period its set at and exceed those expectations a bit, you’ll get this film. I was getting The Spirit (2008) vibes while watching but that was mostly due to its tone and pacing. While we’re talking about the film’s pacing, it really is slow paced (what else would you expect from an almost 3 hour film) but even though it was dragging during the first half due to it feeling like a crime drama, the second half picked up so quickly that it made this film for me. The Chekhov’s Gun principle was evident in the film as well with every element present playing a part one way or the other. Literally every single detail from the film when comparing it side by side between the two halves would show how those film elements progressed whether they be good or bad and this just plays into its storytelling so well that it adds layers upon layers of depth on itself making you gasp or say oh at some point in the film. And just a minor spoiler but K’s deconstruction from machine or replicant to something else really was shown masterfully. He was broken down even showing some social issues like racism, corrupt officials and even discrimination towards their minorities (feels familiar really). All in all though, the film was a visual feast making the viewer feel like they were immersed in their universe, The plot and storytelling were executed masterfully making use of everything that was needed, not going as low as adding a dumb joke in between or looking down on the audience. The music and effects were powerful setting the tone for this film really well being great enough to enhance the film experience and not distract. In terms of the casts acting performance, Ryan Gosling really does make a good robot, Jared Leto is legitimately creepy (in a good way) and Harrison Ford does his best Harrison Ford.

8.5/10 for me. Is it worth the watch? It is but the length really does a number on the viewer experience. It gets better over the course of the film. If you must watch a film this week, watch Blade Runner 2049 and take some coffee beforehand. You’re definitely going to get #shookt and it’s all worth it.

11/10 interest in watching the original
