Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

tldr 7/10 watch it

Zoom in and you'd find some neat film details
You're a 90s kid and it's 2018 right now. Everything from back then is making a resurgence. Remember those Saturday Morning Cartoons you used to watch on TV? They're all coming back one way or another with movies, reboots and new series from the get go. Board games? They're cooler than ever (shout-out to Neutral Grounds and Ongkeco's Hobby Shop). Movies? Always in flavor. Movies about board games? Now we're talking. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle puts a new twist to a beloved franchise but how well does it hold up in this throwback of a year?

Jumanji in its essence follows the same general formula in each of its incarnations. Kids stumble upon and find the game and get sucked into it. To get out the kids need to answer a riddle*. They find an extra player already in the game with this player having been stuck inside the game for the longest time (20 or so years). Wacky antics with acts of bravery ensue with the kids eventually finding their way out of the game and the extra player back in the right time period he or she started in. Now that that's done, let's go through a run down of Jumanji in its recent reincarnations. There's the board game movie, the board game novel, the board game cartoon series on Disney before and there was even JUMANJI IN SPACE the movie aka Zathura. Welcome to the Jungle is Jumanji the board game, the video game the movie.

The kids out in full force

Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian, Nick Jonas and Bobby Cannavale, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle serves as a sequel to the original Jumanji film from 1995 featuring Robin Williams.

What I liked

Most buddy comedy films in a nutshell these days
- It's a good callback film to a much simpler time
- The comedy was top notch (Between the expected humor you'd get from these actors, the sight gags really had me laughing way more than I should have)
- The Rock/Hart tandem comes in full force here showing their acting prowess- The use of the world's video game setting (I'd like to highlight this the most because since its set in a video game, character flaws and unbelievable feats become more believable)
- The whole experience would make you feel as if you were playing a Jumanji video game
- Literally using every detail presented to the viewer (There aren't any blink and you'll miss it moments here but the characters making fun of themselves makes for a really good time)
- Actual character flaws that lead to actual character development
- Random explosions a la grass exploding when power rangers pose
- Consistent running gags (SMOLDERING INTENSITY)
- Video game humor (The cake is a lie)
- Perfect as an entry point into the Jumanji universe without really putting its viewers out of the loop with what's going on

What I didn't like

- For a sequel there wasn't really anything original here plot-wise. The only difference would be in terms of the setting or medium Jumanji would take place in like the original being a board game and the sequel a video game
- There were times wherein it felt like other Rock/Hart films with the humor being so similar and all but thankfully, Jack Black's humor was so innocent and humorous that his elation over certain things made some scenes so memorable
- The usual ragtag group of protagonists from this list namely the loser, the elitist, the nerd and the beauty. It goes on deeper than this due to character development so it's not really that bad
- The riddle was so weak that I didn't even remember it HAHA

All in all, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a welcome film perfect for bridging generations of the first film and its newest viewers. With great effects, great actors and generally clean humor all around, it's perfect as a family film. There are some shortcomings though like as outlined above but they're kinda negligible when you're in it to watch the movie for fun and not to critique it.

7/10 watch it with your family

Quick shout-out to wrestlemania btw

* I really can't remember the riddle at all honestly
