The Commuter (2018)

Or what I originally thought was "Taken on Trains"

There's no doubt in my mind that when it comes to an actor's versatility one just needs to look at the career of a mister Liam Neeson. Just from his voice alone, you could really feel a powerful presence like with James Earl Jones as Darth Vader or Mufasa. Seriously look at this man's acting career and you'd find a common trend. Need a guy with a deep voice perfect for narrations or kingly voices? Or would you need a stoic action hero whose family always appears to be kidnapped? If you've answered yes to any of those questions, then you're probably gonna need Liam Neeson as your main character.

Let me just put this out there right here and now, The Commuter gets an 8.5 out of 10 for me so without even reading this review, you know it's good so go and watch the film as soon as you can. Now that that's out of the way, let's head straight into what made this film so great for me as a viewer.

The Good

- The opening sequence was definitely something else for me. Time lapses are cool.
- Great use of the given area  considering that most of the film takes place in a train.
- The attention to detail when it came to Liam Neeson's investigation skills is just uncanny.
- The movie actually respects the audience enough  to let the audience in on the investigation. You could literally solve the film's conflict if you paid enough attention and that's what makes it fun.
- Action in a Liam Neeson film is always fun. No need to expand on that really.
- Surprising humor at some points in the film.
- Liam Neeson just doing Liam Neeson things on film is always a nice watch.
- The illusion of choice becoming a focal point towards the film's progression. Pretty interesting when you think about it really, but this concept made the film progress well.

Illusion of choice coming in full swing right here

The Bad

- The script feels so basic at times. Take away your rose colored glasses and open your ears. Listen because at some point in the film, it feels too obvious
- You'd have to think that after all the Taken films, Liam Neeson's family wouldn't be taken anymore.
Stop getting your family kidnapped Liam :(
Seriously though, after the opening sequence, the film felt eerily similar to the Taken films. Even a family member was taken.
- Slight spoiler but how was he being monitored all this time.

The Sad

- Tone down the action and violence a bit and "Orient Express" should've been like this :(

Just a really good film in general save for a few weird plot details and the similarity to "Murder on the Orient Express". Also there's Liam Neeson doing Liam Neeson things which is a blessing and a curse at times. 8.5 out of 10, go watch it while it's out now
